NATIVE BACKYARD WITH NATIVE LAWN

This was an exciting project that completely transformed this backyard in Berkeley from an unusable space into a CA Native plant oasis. We used bricks onsite to build an octagonal brick patio, lumber onsite to build a custom veggie bed, created a mound to plant a Madrone tree, Manzanita, Buckwheat, sage and purple needle grass, and planted woodland species under the Oak overstory. The lawn is a native drought tolerant species of Agrostis Pallens.

SUNNY PARKING STRIP

This front parkingstrip is in full sun and in the hills where deer frequently walk by. I chose plants which are low maintenance, deer resistant, and drought tolerant. We sheet mulched to keep down the weeds then planted.

SUNNY FRONT YARD

A house in the Oakland hills with full sun along both sides of the driveway. The client wanted to add color and interest with drought tolerant plants. BWG designed and installed this garden featuring kangaroo paw and blue chalksticks. The client requested red mulch to add more color.

DROUGHT TOLERANT HILLSIDE

This is a backyard located in the Oakland hills. We used a blend of CA Native and Mediterranean climate plants to create a colorful landscape that will be low maintenance and provide habitat for the local pollinators. The idea was also to prevent erosion by adding plants that will root down and hold onto the earth during rain events. Initially there were many old dead plants that needed removal as well as rocks and pebbles that were relocated. We added soil where the hill had been eroded, planted the new arrivals, and installed drip irrigation.

EL SOBRANTE FRONT YARD

This front yard was a yellowing lawn of Bermuda grass that the client was eager to change. The first step was to kill the grass without using chemicals. A thick layer of black plastic was laid on top of it to essentially bake the grass during the summer months. It was sufficiently dead by the fall when we sheet mulched with a thick layer of cardboard, soil and mulch. We then planted with a 100% CA Native plant palette with species able to withstand the hot El Sobrante weather.

LAWN CONVERSION

At a home in the Oakland Hills, we completely removed a 1000 sq ftlawn, and replaced it with pathways, terraces, benches, vegetable beds, potted herbs, and a drought-tolerant and native planting. The install was completed with drip-irrigation and a topper of rich mulch. The vegetable beds are planted with seasonally appropriate crops and are regularly harvested and maintained

NATIVE GARDEN

This garden features all California Native plants and is in the Fruitvale region of Oakland, California. Bay Wise performed a lawn replacement in a portion of this yard. The existing lawn was killed by stifling with black plastic over the summer. We amended the soil with rich compost and planted a design by Bay Wise Gardens which features all California Native plants that do well in Oakland. The install was completed with a drip irrigation system and a top layer of mulch. Another aspect of this garden is a waterfall the client wanted to vegetate. Bay Wise designed a water loving planting for the borders of the waterfall mimics a riparian habitat along a creek in the Bay Area to give the garden a natural feel.

SHADE GARDEN

We removed an old patch of dying grass from this almost completely shaded yard in Berkeley, CA. Lauren designed a new landscape for the client keeping in mind that 95% of the yard was in deep shade. The newly installed garden features vegetation in a variety of colors, sizes and blooming times. In the few sunny patches that do exist in the yard, we installed blueberry shrubs, strawberries and cooking herbs. A complete drip irrigation system was put in place without undoing any existing, functioning irrigation piping. Mulch was added on top of all the yard to hide the irrigation lines and keep in moisture.

BUDDHA GARDEN

This backyard was a steep slope in deep shade. The client wanted to resurrect a Buddha sculpture that was hidden behind an overgrown shrub by bringing it forward. Lauren planted around the Buddha and slope to create a lovely new space. BWG also refreshed the pathway by bringing in golden decomposed granite and laying slate stone on top for an elegant look. The result is a transformed backyard that the client can enjoy for years to come.

VEGETABLE GARDEN

This is a garden located in the Berkeley hills on a western facing slope. The two boxes were in place already but needed heavy weeding and compost addition. Bay Wise Gardens dug out tree roots which loosened the soil then amended the soil with organic compost. Vegetable starts and seeds were planted and drip irrigation was installed. This is a highly productive organic vegetable garden which the homeowners eat from daily. So far the crops which have been harvested include: Radishes, Kale, Chard, two varieties of Broccoli, Collard Greens, Spinach, Strawberries, Turnips, Thyme, Chervil, Cilantro, and three kinds of lettuces.

COASTAL GARDEN

Bay Wise Gardens designed a planting that is beautiful and drought tolerant in this Pt. Richmond garden. Portions of the yard are exposed to high winds and salt spray from the bay. The plants chosen for these spots are adapted to harsh seaside conditions. Other sections of the garden include a cactus garden and an oak woodland plant community. After planting we installed drip irrigation and mulched on top of that to create a polished finish.

MAINTENANCE BEFORE AND AFTER

A yard covered in weeds transformed with a little attention. We removed the weeds and added compost and mulch. The existing plants really shine now that they are not stifled by overgrowth. The compost will enrich the soil to keep the plants happy and the mulch will help to retain moisture.
